KOUNTZE, Texas, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A Texas judge will hear a lawsuit brought by a group of high school cheerleaders who said school officials told them to stop using Bible verses on their signs.
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot said he will defend the cheerleaders from Kountze High School in Kountze, Texas, about 90 miles northwest of Houston, whose signs at football games say things like "I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me."
The Houston Chronicle reported the Freedom From Religion Foundation complained about the girls' signs, and school officials agreed to tell the girls to stop making them.
Abbot said the signs are protected by the First Amendment and should not be banned.
A hearing has been set for Thursday in Hardin County Court.
