Woman says boyfriend was behind shooting

SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- A woman who survived a deadly shooting in Texas told jurors her former boyfriend was the trigger man.

Candice Moten, who survived an attack that killed her mother, sister and caused her to lose her unborn baby, told a jury James David Morrison opened fire after the women accused him of slashing the tires on their car. Lying wounded, Moten's mother Laura said, "I'm not dead yet," at which point Morrison shot her again, Candice Moten tearfully recounted, the San Antonio Express-News reported Tuesday.

Morrison's lawyer Joel Perez said his client was acting in self-defense. He asked Moten about a knife found at the scene and charged that the women attacked his 5-foot-8, 160 pound client, knocking him to the ground while threatening him with the knife.

Morrison faces the death penalty or life in prison if convicted, the newspaper said. He may later face trial for shooting Candice Moten in the abdomen when she was five months pregnant, causing her to lose the child.
