DETROIT, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- A worker at a Detroit Chrysler factory stabbed a man to death Thursday morning, then took his own life, police said.
The Detroit News reports the incident took place at Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant just before 8 a.m. Police said they found the suspect -- who stabbed his victim and slit his throat -- dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after locating his Jeep on a nearby island.
Union officials said the killing prompted a lockdown of the entire facility and production to cease as police investigated the incident. The killer and his victim have not been identified.
Witnesses told The Detroit News the attacker came up to his victim and whispered something in his ear before stabbing him and jumping onto a nearby forklift.
Workers on the morning shift were let go early, union officials said, and employees left the facility in groups of five.
"Chrysler Group is deeply saddened by events that occurred at its Jefferson North Assembly Plant this morning," the company said in a statement. "Two employees were involved in an altercation inside the plant. One employee was stabbed and unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene."
The Jefferson North Assembly Plant employs more than 3,000 and makes the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango.
