WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Domestic violence awareness groups say Nevada is again the state where a woman is the most likely to be killed by a man.
In a report released Wednesday, the Violence Policy Center in Washington says in Nevada, 2.62 women out of every 100,000 women are killed by a man annually. Ranked behind Nevada are South Carolina (1.94 per 100,000), Tennessee (1.91 per 100,000), Louisiana (1.86 per 100,000) and Virginia (1.77 per 100,000). The national rate is 1.22 per 100,000 women are killed by a man.
"Women face an unacceptable risk of being victims of homicide perpetrated by people they know and love," VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand said. "Much more must be done to protect women and prevent domestic violence that too often escalates to homicide."
Nationally, 1,800 women were killed by a man in 2010 and of those instances, 94 percent of the victims knew their attacker, the group said.
