11 inmates hurt in Folsom prison riot

FOLSOM, Calif., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Inmates rioted at the maximum-security prison in Folsom, Calif., Wednesday with 11 of them winding up in the hospital, authorities said.

State prisons spokeswoman Terry Thornton said one of the prisoners was wounded by a shot from a guard's rifle, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The others had stab and slash wounds. Their conditions were unknown.

Thornton said the melee broke out about 11:15 a.m. It wasn't clear how many inmates were involved or what triggered it, she said.

No prison staff members were injured, Thornton said.

Thornton said several rounds were fired from a Mini 14 rifle. She said corrections officers also used non-lethal weapons, probably including pepper spray or guns that fire foam bullets.

"Usually, deadly force is used as a last resort -- we have clear laws about the use of deadly force, and any time it is used, it is investigated," Thornton told the newspaper. The "deadly force investigative team will look at the use and make sure it was within policy and state law."

The violence in Folsom follows the weekend stabbing death of an inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison.
