NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Charities in New Orleans have noted a lack of donations nationally to help the city recover from Hurricane Isaac.
Unlike the outpouring of support following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, officials with the New Orleans Catholic diocese said this time around, donations from outside the region have been few.
"From our point of view, the biggest challenge with this disaster will be getting attention and money," said Gordon Wadge, president of Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of New Orleans. "This is going to be on the local community -- with a few national folks who follow us closely and who will rally to us."
Relief efforts so far have centered around flooded LaPlace, La., where various ministries have set up shop to help homeowners whose homes flooded and who didn't have flood insurance to cover it.
That is in contrast to Katrina, the aftermath of which drew millions in donations and thousands of volunteers from across the country to help combat the devastation, the (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported.
