Immigrant offenders rounded up in Texas

SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Fifty undocumented immigrants with criminal convictions, 40 of them for sex offenses, have been arrested in Texas, federal officials say.

The roundup occurred over five days, the Austin American-Statesman reported. It specifically targeted undocumented immigrants with convictions for sex offenses, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.

The operation was described as a "sting" but ICE would not release details on how it was carried out. Enrique Lucero, head of ICE enforcement and removal operations in San Antonio, would not identify those who were detained.

Lucero said the government plans to seek deportation of the detainees. But those who have been deported previously and returned would be prosecuted first.

The detainees were living freely in Texas when they were arrested, Lucero said.
