Girl, 5, killed by driver in Ill.

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A car driven by an 18-year-old woman jumped a curb north of Chicago and killed a 5-year-old girl who was walking with her mother, Highland Park police said.

The girl, identified by the medical examiner as Jaclyn Santos-Sacramento, was rushed to a nearby hospital Monday afternoon where she was pronounced dead, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The girl's mother and two young brothers were also hurt but their injuries were not believed life-threatening, the newspaper reported.

Police have not identified the teenager who was driving the Lexus that struck the girl and have yet to file charges, the Chicago Tribune said, but witnesses told the newspaper the young driver appeared unsteady when talking with police and briefly looked like she had passed out.

A makeshift memorial to Santos-Sacramento was set up near the site of the crash, with mourners leaving behind balloons, stuffed animals and religious candles, the Tribune said.

"This accident is a parent's worst nightmare and has created a devastating loss," Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering said.
