Van crashes home, teen killed

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A teenager died early Tuesday after a van crashed into her bedroom as she slept, Jacksonville, Fla. police said.

Janay Jackson, 17, was clinging to life as emergency responders took her to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center on the University of Florida campus. She died there a short time later, the Florida Times-Union reported.

The girl's single-story home is at a three-way intersection. The driver, who has not been identified and who also suffered serious injuries, drove through the intersection at 2:40 a.m., then through an exterior brick wall and into the bedroom, the report said.

The girl's parents were home at the time, but were not struck, the paper reported.

Detective Robert Peck said roads were dry and weather was not considered a factor in the crash.

"We will be looking at speed and alcohol throughout the investigation," he said.
