Dog mauls woman at Md. farmers' market

WAVERLY, Md., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A Maryland woman was attacked by a rottweiler at a farmers' market in Waverly after the dog broke its leash, police said.

The attack happened at about 10:15 a.m. Saturday, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Witnesses said the dog had been tied up to a parking meter behind one of the vendors' trucks before it broke loose and entered the farmers' market.

Dana Moore, a Charles Village resident who witnessed the attack, said she saw the woman running from the dog before it jumped on her and knocked her to the ground.

"He was all over her," Moore said. "My impression was that this lady was going to be hurt real bad."

Baltimore police officer Wayne Early, who was working security at the market at the time of the attack, said the woman was brought to Union Memorial Hospital with bites to her left arm and leg and a scrape on her face.

The dog's owner, who was not at the scene when the attack happened but showed up shortly thereafter, was given citations by police and animal control workers, Early said.

Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke said the dog was initially quarantined at the owner's home, but was then picked up and taken to a shelter pending a hearing.
