Climber's body still not recovered

GUNNISON, Colo., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A Connecticut man's body has yet to be recovered from the rockslide that killed him, a Colorado sheriff's deputy said.

The victim, 24, has not been identified. Officials told the Aspen News the man was climbing with a group of five people when the rockslide occurred Saturday. The group had already climbed Snowmass Mountain and was hiking a ridge to nearby Maroon Bells-Snowmass when "the floor underneath their feet just gave way," Pitkin County sheriff's deputy Renee Rayton said.

The mountains are about 11 miles southwest of Aspen.

A recovery team has yet to be able to retrieve the man's body due to a heavy volume of active rescue calls in the area since Saturday.

One other member of the party suffered a broken ankle and the group was air-lifted to safety, the newspaper reported. Before the helicopter could return to the scene to retrieve the man's body, it was sent to help a 63-year-old climber who had fallen and suffered a head injury.
