NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The average child in the United States is paid $65 per month in allowance, a survey by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants shows.
The Harris Interactive poll conducted for the institute polled 1,006 families by telephone in July and found 61 percent of parents pay an allowance to their children.
Among the parents who pay, 54 percent said they start doling out cash when their children reach the age of 8, the institute said in a release.
About 48 percent said they pay extra when their children earn good school grades.
"These findings make clear that it can pay to be a kid," said institute spokesman Jordan Amin.
The survey found allowances come with strings -- 89 percent of parents said they expect at least an hour's worth of chores per week, although the average number of chore hours was 6.2, the report said.
There was no margin of error reported for the survey.
