Small plane makes landing on Fla. highway

TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- A pilot of a small plane caused a major traffic jam Thursday morning when he made an emergency landing on a Florida highway.

The pilot, Craig Pulliam, 64, and two passengers escaped without injury, WTSP-TV in Tampa reported.

Pulliam had just taken off from Peter O. Knight Airport in a 2004 Piper PA-32R-301T Turbo Saratoga when the low voltage light went on and he discovered the plane was losing oil rapidly.

He descended and attempted a landing on the south side of Interstate 75 in Gibsonton but was forced to land in the center strip when his wing clipped a road sign.

About 60 gallons of fuel spilled from the plane, emergency officials said.
