JONESBORO, Ark., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The Jonesboro, Ark., Police Department released more evidence in the death of Chavis Carter, who allegedly shot himself while handcuffed in a squad car.
Among the evidence released Wednesday by the police department was a video allegedly found on Carter's phone of an African-American adult male who is seen smoking marijuana with two children, who were "approximately 10 years of age," a Jonesboro, Ark., police release said.
Police also said in an interview with Carter's girlfriend, the woman told police "Carter called her from the rear of the police car and told her that he loved her and that he had a gun on him (in the rear of the police car) and he was scared," the release said.
Because the investigation is ongoing, police didn't release all evidence in the case.
"We cannot release the full scope of this information until this is complete (related to the phone) but we can release some of it," the release said.
Chavis Carter died July 28 from a gunshot wound to the head while he was handcuffed in the back of a police vehicle. A medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, which has sparked public outcry.
Carter's mother, Teresa, the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., and many others marched to from the spot where Carter was shot to the police station Wednesday, WREG-TV, Memphis, reported.
Jackson said the recently released information may cloud the facts of the case.
"Unless one believes in Houdini for real and we know Chavis was not Houdini, you try putting your left hand behind your back and hitting yourself in the left temple," he said.
