WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Aug. 14 (UPI) -- What appeared to be a pill-taking suicide attempt in a Florida court last week was a convicted minister eating breath mints, a prosecutor confirmed Tuesday.
Immediately after the Rev. James Richard Harris, 64, was convicted in a West Palm Beach court of molesting a 15-year-old boy and videotaping teenagers engaged in sex, he swallowed a handful of what resembled pills and told deputies he would be dead by nightfall as paramedics rushed him from the courtroom on a gurney, the West Palm Beach Post reported Tuesday.
After being placed on a suicide watch in Palm Beach County Jail over the weekend, toxicology reports on the pills revealed they were breath mints, the newspaper said.
Harris still faces an 80-year jail sentence.
"Yes, mints," prosecutor Chrichet Mixon said Monday. "My initial reaction was the same as the one I had at the time this happened. Nothing this man does surprises me."
