Democratic convention being scripted

WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- President Obama's campaign advisers reportedly want to use the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., to contrast him with Mitt Romney.

Politico, citing Democratic sources, said the staff is working on what amounts to a script for the three-day convention that will suggest a Romney presidency "would devastate the American middle class." The president would be depicted as someone helping the middle class and those who want to join it.

The script is also believed to include spots every night for "real people" and for testimonials contrasting Democratic and Republican positions on issues such as gays in the military and birth control. But Ben LaBolt, the campaign's press secretary, said much is still fluid.

"A number of speaking programs are under consideration for the convention, and the only ones that are final are those that have been announced," he said. "It's no secret that the convention will both present the president's vision and outline the choice that Americans will face in November."

The convention runs Sept. 4-6 and is one day shorter than the Republican convention in Tampa, Fla.
