Utah's Pinyon fire doubles in size

SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The lightning-sparked Pinyon wildfire in Utah Thursday jumped containment lines and doubled in size to 6,290 acres, fire officials said.

The blaze, which started Sunday, had been largely contained to the Utah National Guard's Camp Williams, 26 miles south of Salt Lake City, but now threatens the southwest Salt Lake County town of Herriman, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Embers were blown outside containment lines and quickly spread the fire from 3,000 acres to 6,290 acres amid bone-dry vegetation, the newspaper said. Containment fell from 40 percent to 10 percent, but no evacuations have been ordered.

"Things looked better this morning," fire information officer Kim Osborn told the newspaper. "The fire pretty much laid down overnight, but we're not all the way out of the woods yet. It has stopped moving toward Herriman, but we still need to see what happens later with the winds."

Meanwhile, the Faust fire 9 miles northwest of Vernon had burned 20,000 acres and was 25 percent contained Thursday.
