LA employees watching Olympics at work

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles councilwoman has called for online streaming of the Olympic Games to be blocked from computers at City Hall.

Councilwoman Jan Perry's request came after she learned many employees at Los Angeles City Hall were watching the Olympics online at work, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"We are going to stop this activity now," she said. "That is what I am requesting they do immediately."

City Hall employees were sent an e-mail Tuesday from the city's chief technology officer pleading with them to stop watching the Olympics online for fear of a computer meltdown.

"We are experiencing a high volume of traffic due to people watching the Olympics online. I respectfully request that you discontinue this as it is impacting city operations," city tech officer Randi Levin wrote in the e-mail.

Perry isn't the only council member who expressed concern that city employees were watching the Olympics on the job.

"City employees aren't paid to watch the Olympics on their computers or TV. That is not what the taxpayers are paying them to do," said Councilman Dennis Zine. "The question is where are the supervisors when this is going on?"
