Poll: Favor for tough Iran sanctions

WASHINGTON, July 31 (UPI) -- Four out of five Americans view Iran's nuclear development program as a threat to the United States as well as its NATO allies, a poll indicated.

The Israel Project commissioned a survey of 800 likely voters and found 80 percent said they believe Iran is building nuclear weapons, despite repeated denials from the Iranian government. Thirty-nine percent said they considered Iran's nuclear program a threat to the United States, and 60 percent considered it a threat to Israel.

Support for tougher sanctions against Iran was strong, with 78 percent backing such measures. A House vote is expected as early as Wednesday on a new round of sanctions targeting Iran's energy, shipping and insurance industries.

The poll showed 80 percent supported the measures even if they negatively affect ordinary Iranians.

The poll, conducted by Public Opinion Strategies between July 18-19, has a margin of error of 3.46 percentage points.
