ALBUQUERQUE, July 29 (UPI) -- A possible electrical problem forced a plane carrying Sen. Marco Rubio to make an emergency landing this weekend, an airport official in New Mexico said.

Rubio, R-Fla., had to cancel an appearance in Iowa on behalf of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney when his plane developed trouble and had to set down in Albuquerque.

The reason for the emergency landing late Saturday afternoon was not immediately clear but an Albuquerque airport official told Politico it appeared to be an electrical issue.

Rubio, who has been mentioned as a potential running mate for Romney, did his best to rally the Republican troops in Iowa from long distance. The South Florida Sun Sentinel said his Twitter account was abuzz with updates from Albuquerque and Rubio spoke to a crowd in Des Moines via cell phone
