Shark attacks kayak off California coast

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., July 8 (UPI) -- The sheriff's office in Santa Cruz, Calif., is warning residents to watch out for sharks after a kayaker was attacked by one in the area.

The kayaker, a 52-year-old man, was fishing near Pleasure Point around 8:30 a.m. Saturday when his kayak was bit by a shark, the San Fransisco Chronicle reported.

He was thrown from his vessel, but was quickly rescued by another boater who was nearby.

The shark swam off after the initial attack, leaving gashes on the kayak and a tooth on the scene.

The sheriff's office used the attack to warn about sharks in the area, but said sharks "generally stay in deeper waters and do not bother humans."
