Utah boy, 4, killed by falling tombstone

PARK CITY, Utah, July 7 (UPI) -- A 4-year-old Utah boy died after a large headstone fell on him in a cemetery, police said.

Park City police were investigating what caused the nearly 6-foot-tall grave marker to topple on Carson Dean Cheney of Lehi about 6 p.m. Thursday at Glenwood Cemetery, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

The boy was trapped beneath the stone for a time before members of his family were able to lift it off him, police Capt. Phil Kirk said. He died later at Park City Medical Center.

"This tragic accident has taken the life of our energetic, sweet, beloved little boy," his grandmother, Geri Gibbs, said in a statement. "We appreciate your thoughts and prayers, but wish for privacy at this difficult time."

Bruce Erickson, president of the Glenwood Cemetery Association, said he didn't know why the Cheney family was at the historic cemetery, but there wasn't a burial or memorial service under way at the time.
