Monsignor Lynn denied house arrest

PHILADELPHIA, July 5 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia judge Thursday denied Monsignor William J. Lynn's request for house arrest until he is sentenced on his child endangerment conviction.

Common Pleas Judge M. Teresa Sarmina ordered Lynn, a former administrator for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, to remain in jail, where he has been held since his June 22 conviction, but agreed to advance his sentencing date from Aug. 13 to July 24, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday.

A jury found he had endangered children by leaving former priest Edward Avery in active ministry in the 1990s despite knowing Avery had abused a minor. Avery later sexually assaulted a 10-year-old altar boy, the newspaper reported.

Lynn faces a seven-year prison term and prosecutors have said they will argue for the maximum.
