June jackpot for Romney fundraisers

WASHINGTON, July 5 (UPI) -- Republican Party officials said June was a bonanza for Mitt Romney, who set a new party record for presidential fundraising in a single month.

Romney raked in more than $100 million, well above his goal for the month and a solid improvement over the $77 million banked in May.

Romney did particularly well in Colorado, Ohio, Michigan and New Jersey, Politico said, with a sizable chunk coming from first-time donors.

Politico said Romney outdistanced President Obama, who raised $60 million in June. The president, however, still holds the single-month record for any presidential candidate of $150 million set in September 2008.
