Woman loses scalp in industrial accident

BARBERTON, Ohio, July 4 (UPI) -- An Ohio woman working in an auto parts factory was hospitalized after her hair was tangled in a machine, ripping her scalp from her head, a report said.

Monica Thayer, 25, on the sixth night of her job Tuesday at automotive parts company JR Engineering in Barberton, Ohio, caught her long brown hair in a machine she was operating, her mother said.

"It caught hold of her hair and just pulled her in," said her mother Mary, an employee of 25 years who had operated the same machine.

The machine tore Thayer's scalp from her eyebrows backward to her neck, the (Akron, Ohio) Beacon Journal reported Wednesday, adding it was not until paramedics arrived that she could be freed from the machine.

Surgeons at Akron General Medical Center reattached about 75 per cent of her scalp, and plastic surgery is expected in the future, her family said.
