Police officer stabbed at rail station

NEW YORK, July 4 (UPI) -- A New York City transportation police officer was stabbed Wednesday before shooting and killing his attacker in a train station altercation, authorities said.

The incident occurred outside the Long Island Railroad station in Jamaica, Queens, Metropolitan Transportation Authority and New York Fire Department officials reported.

The wounded officer, stabbed in the left eye, was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition, the New York Post said Wednesday. An MTA representative told the newspaper the officer is expected to survive.

The uniformed officer shot and killed his alleged assailant, described by police to be an emotionally disturbed person who attacked the officer without provocation.
