School District apologizes for teacher's Facebook insults

BRADENTON, Fla., July 3 (UPI) -- The Manatee County School District publicly apologized for the Bradenton, Fla., elementary school teacher who insulted a student on Facebook.

Margi Nanney, a representative of the district, said Monday the actions of the teacher, whose name was not released, were inappropriate, WFTV, Orlando, reported.

"I'm fairly convinced that one of my students may be the evolutionary link between orangutans and humans," the teacher said on Facebook. The teacher also identified the student's initials and grade level.

The post was soon deleted after the school registrar commented, "What in the hell is that supposed to mean?" and showed the post to the school's principal.

"First of all, that was very inappropriate, and we certainly do not condone anything like that," Nanney said. "I think lessons come hard in this life, and I think social media is one of the places where people can make mistakes, and we hope this never occurs again."
