Man who stormed pharmacy dies in shootout

ALLIANCE, Neb., June 13 (UPI) -- A 14-hour standoff at an Alliance, Neb., pharmacy ended when a man armed with a high-powered rifle died during a gunfight with police, officials said.

Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins confirmed Andres Gonzales died in the exchange of gunfire with the State Patrol SWAT team at the pharmacy, Nebraska Radio Network said.

Gonzales held one hostage, identified as the pharmacy's owner, Charles Lierk, who sustained a gunshot wound when he escaped Tuesday evening, police said. Lierk, 62, was listed in stable condition at a hospital.

Collins says three officers were injured in the standoff. Two were treated for non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. The third officer's injuries were not disclosed.

The standoff began just before 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Thiele Pharmacy and Gifts, police said.

As law officers tried to negotiate with Gonzales, state troopers served a warrant at a home about a mile from the pharmacy, the Omaha World Herald said. Troopers found a body in the home, but it wasn't clear how the person died or whether Gonzales was responsible for the death.

Witnesses told the Herald authorities created a three-block security perimeter around the pharmacy and businesses inside the perimeter were locked down.
