Lawyer wants 27 months for mob girlfriend

BOSTON, June 11 (UPI) -- Catherine Greig's lawyer said she should serve no more than 27 months in prison for spending 16 years on the run with Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger.

Attorney Kevin Reddington said Greig, 61, should not receive the 10-year sentence federal prosecutors suggested because she was blinded by her love for Bulger, who is accused of killing 19 people, The Boston Globe reported Monday.

"It is not justice to use the law as a cudgel to exact the proverbial 'pound of flesh' from a kind, gentle, 60-year-old woman who is at the mercy of this court for a fair sentencing commensurate with her conduct which arose out of the love she had for Mr. James Bulger," Reddington wrote in a sentencing recommendation filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Boston.

Authorities arrested Greig and Bulger -- who was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list -- last year in Santa Monica, Calif. Greig pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, conspiracy to commit identity fraud and identity fraud.

Based on federal sentencing guidelines, Greig could be sentenced 27 to 33 months in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 for each conviction at her sentencing hearing Tuesday, the Globe reported.
