KODIAK, Alaska, June 9 (UPI) -- A U.S. Army landing craft was beached on an Alaskan island Saturday after it apparently hit a submerged object during a training mission, the Coast Guard said.
The landing craft Monterrey was in no danger of sinking but one of the California-based ship's 8,000-gallon fuel tanks was ruptured, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a written statement.
It was not clear how much fuel, if any, had leaked from the ship.
The Monterrey was hauling heavy construction equipment from California to Bethel, Alaska, as part of a Marine Corps training exercise when it hit something in Chiniak Bay late Friday. The vessel was intentionally beached on Puffin Island when it began taking on water.
Two crew members suffered minor injuries and were evacuated to one of the two civilian fishing boats that responded to the Monterrey's distress call.
The Coast Guard said the Monterrey was attached to the 481st Transportation Company based at Vallejo, Calif.
