MARIN, Calif., June 8 (UPI) -- A Pablo Picasso painting worth $30,000 is missing from a California mansion after more than 100 teenagers illegally threw a party in the home, police said.
The painting, along with about $5,000 worth of silver candlestick holders, leather coats and laptop computers were reported missing from the Marin home of imprisoned former Ukrainian Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko on May 28, The Marin Independent Journal reported Friday.
A caretaker discovered the items missing the day after police were called to the mansion because a large group of teenagers was discovered drinking there.
"They had gotten in and basically ransacked multiple rooms in the house," police Sgt. Eric Riddell said.
When police arrived to break up the party, the teens scattered, Riddell said.
Lazarenko was arrested in 1998 on suspicion of money laundering in Switzerland. He fled to the United States and was arrested in New York and sent to the Marin County jail to await processing of an asylum request.
His mansion was acquired by Dugsbery Inc., a Novato real estate company.
