Detroit mayor approves budget cuts

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich., May 31 (UPI) -- Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said Thursday $250 million in budget cuts have been agreed upon in a rare accord between branches of city government.

Speaking at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island, Mich., Bing said, "My administration fundamentally agrees with the City Council's recommendations for the 2012-2013 budget," a $1.2 billion spending plan that calls for Detroit's Human Services Department to be eliminated, the Transportation and Lighting departments to be privatized and 2,600 job losses, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday.

"This budget supports my financial and operational restructuring plan that will restore fiscal stability to the city of Detroit," Bing added.

The lack of political squabbles between the Detroit's executive and legislative branches on budget adoption matters is "the first time in recent memory," the newspaper noted.
