ALBUQUERQUE, May 30 (UPI) -- A wildfire raging through New Mexico is the largest in the state's history, burning more than 156,000 acres, officials said Wednesday.
The Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire, being battled by more than 1,000 firefighters, is zero percent contained and poses a threat to the communities of Mogollon and Willow Creek, KOAT-TV, Albuquerque, reported.
Officials said the fire would likely grow to 170,000 by the end of the week.
Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., toured the devastation from the air Wednesday, pledged federal help in the firefighting effort and warned, "The biggest impediment to going ahead and dealing with this fire would be if another fire breaks out in this state, and you have to take the people who are working to try to control the fire and move them somewhere else."
