HACKENSACK, N.J., May 30 (UPI) -- A New Jersey man who repeatedly stabbed himself and threw his intestines and skin at police is in critical condition, Hackensack police said.

Police said they received a call Sunday that Wayne Carter, 43, was threatening to injure himself with a knife at his Hackensack home, The (Hackensack) Record reported Tuesday.

When police arrived at the home, they kicked in the door to Carter's room before he began yelling and stabbing himself all over his body, Lt. John Heinemann said.

As the man stabbed himself, officers said they observed his intestines protruding from his abdomen. Carter began to throw his intestines and skin at the officers as they attempted to enter the room, Heinemann told the newspaper.

The Bergen County SWAT Team was able to subdue Carter and transfer him to Hackensack University Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition Tuesday, The Record said.

Carter had previously been arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and had been admitted to the hospital for psychiatric reasons, Heinemann said.
