WASHINGTON, May 29 (UPI) -- Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a Cuban-American lawmaker, made his first trip Tuesday to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a spokesman said.
While visiting Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Rubio was scheduled to see the Expeditionary Legal Complex, where the military tribunals of detainees are being conducted, and tour a building where some detainees are held, ABC News reported.
"This visit will allow [Rubio] an opportunity to better understand the role Guantanamo Bay plays in U.S. detention operations and examine how the military commission process for trying the terrorists housed there is proceeding," Rubio spokesman Alex Conant said in an e-mail
Rubio, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, is to receive an intelligence overview of the base and meet with the Joint Task Force Guantanamo commander, U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Jeffrey Harbeson.
Rubio was to return to Miami Tuesday evening.
