McCain: Obama foreign policy ineffective

WASHINGTON, May 27 (UPI) -- President Obama has put U.S. foreign policy on auto-pilot while he concentrates on getting re-elected, a senior Republican senator said Sunday.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said on "Fox News Sunday" Obama failed to take decisive steps to help the revolution in Libya and bolster opposition movements in Iran, and was now allowing the situation in Syria to deteriorate.

"Horrible things are happening in Syria," said McCain, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee. "This administration has a feckless foreign policy which abandons American leadership."

"It's really just a sad story,' McCain said. "The conclusion you can draw is that this president wants to kick the can down the road on all of these issues until after the election. And it's really an abdication of everything that America stands for and believes in."

McCain told Fox that depending on Russia to help push through a regime change in Syria or defuse the Iranian nuclear standoff would likely be ineffective. "I think that it is time to draw red lines for the United States and Israel together," he said.
