Denver Zoo employee bitten by rabid bat

DENVER, May 24 (UPI) -- A wild bat that bit a Denver Zoo employee has tested positive for rabies, Colorado health officials said.

The incident occurred Sunday. The bat was not a part of a zoo exhibit, The Denver Post reported Thursday.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has asked any zoo patron who came in contact with the bat to come forward for testing, and pointed out that parents who visited the zoo with their children should ascertain if the child touched the bat.

"People can be exposed to rabies when they assist, feed or handle wild animals," state veterinarian Elisabeth Lawaczeck said. "It is not known whether anyone other than the zoo employee had contact with the bat."

Denver Zoo officials reported all its animals are vaccinated against rabies and have no concern any animals were infected.
