U.S. to pursue 'digital government'

WASHINGTON, May 23 (UPI) -- U.S. President Obama announced Wednesday the federal government is going high-tech, directing department and agency heads to enhance digital services.

In a memo titled "Building a 21st Century Digital Government," a 12-month road map was offered to provide government agencies new ways of offering information and advice to citizens through digital services.

"At a time when Americans increasingly pay bills and buy tickets on mobile devices, government services are not optimized for smartphones or tablets," the memorandum says in part.

It mentions the federal chief information officer's strategy, called "Building a 21st Century Platform to Better Serve the American People," will offer "more efficient and coordinated digital service delivery" and provide specific ways to measure government agencies' success in reaching goals in delivering government services digitally.
