TOLEDO, Ohio, May 19 (UPI) -- A newborn baby died after being attacked by a pet dog while her mother and grandmother were in another room of their Ohio home, police said.

An autopsy performed Friday determined the 3-day-old infant died of head injuries, Dr. Cynthia Beisser, a deputy Lucas County medical examiner, said. She said the injuries were consistent with dog bites.

Steve Kahle, a coroner's investigator, said Makayla was asleep in a swing in the living room at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday while her mother and grandmother were in the kitchen. The two women said they heard nothing from the living room.

"It all appeared to happen in a matter of seconds," he said.

The dog, a pit-bull mix, is being held for 10 days quarantine. A judge will decide whether it should be destroyed.
