Girl caught in Ohio shooting rampage dies

CLEVELAND, May 16 (UPI) -- Kayla Allen, a 10-year-old who survived an April shooting rampage by her father at an Ohio restaurant, has died, a hospice official said.

Jane Van Bergen, spokeswoman for Hospice of the Western Reserve, said Kayla died at her home in Strongsville, Ohio, Tuesday afternoon, in the arms of her aunt and surrounded by family.

Her family was celebrating her sister Kerri's birthday at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Brooklyn, Ohio, on April 12, at which her mother, Katie, 42, told her father, Kevin, 51, she was leaving him. Kevin Allen left the restaurant, returned with a shotgun, and killed his wife and daughter Kerri, leaving Kayla alive but shot in the face. Brooklyn police killed Allen as he left the restaurant, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer said Wednesday.

Kayla was taken to MetroHealth Hospital, where she stayed four weeks, the newspaper said.

The family said she was released to hospice care at home after her condition worsened last week.
