CYPRESS, Texas, April 26 (UPI) -- Police arrested two Houston-area teens for allegedly trying to pass counterfeit $20 bills at their high school cafeteria, Harris County Constable Deputies said.
The 15- and 16-year-old students, whose names were not reported because they are juveniles, were charged Wednesday with second-degree forgery of a government instrument, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Cafeteria workers at Cypress Ranch High school alerted authorities after they noticed the $20 bills the two teens used to buy lunch had similar serial numbers, the newspaper said. Assistant Chief Deputy Mark Herman said the students printed the money on their home computers.
"We've determined that a couple of students got some $20 bills and scanned them on their (computer) scanners," Herman said. "They copied and regenerated the bills."
Local authorities contacted the U.S. Secret Service since counterfeiting money is a federal offense, but since the teens are juveniles, they will only face state charges, the Chronicle said.
