GSA scandal drives DATA act

WASHINGTON, April 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. House Wednesday approved by unanimous consent a bill to better track how federal funds are spent.

The measure passed in a near-empty chamber but had bipartisan support in the wake of a scandal at the General Services Administration, The Hill newspaper reported.

In a more direct response to the scandal, the bill also would cut the travel budgets of federal departments by 20 percent from 2010 levels, the report said.

The Digital Accountability and Transparency Act, or DATA, would set up a single online resource that explains how federal money is spent, The Hill said, and get data from those getting federal funds

A GSA conference in Las Vegas in 2010 cost taxpayers $830,000, and has drawn fire that it was a waste of federal funds.
