Delaware executes 28-year-old killer

WILMINGTON, Del., April 20 (UPI) -- Delaware executed Shannon M. Johnson by lethal injection early Friday for the 2006 murder of 25-year-old Cameron Hamlin, the Corrections Department said.

No one from Johnson's family was present for the execution that took place at the Vaughn Correction Center near Smyrna, Del., the Wilmington (Del.) News-Journal reported.

Johnson, 28, was found guilty in 2008 of shooting Hamlin after he found him sitting in a car with Johnson's ex-girlfriend. Johnson later shot the former girlfriend but she survived.

Since the guilty verdict, Johnson kept asking the state to hurry up and put him to death.

Once in the death chamber, he stared straight up at the ceiling after being strapped to a table.

The Department of Corrections said his last words were "Loyalty is important. Without loyalty, you have nothing. Death before dishonor."

He then made a statement in Arabic and closed his eyes.
