Half of Americans say tax tab too high

WASHINGTON, April 16 (UPI) -- Americans are almost evenly split between those who say they pay too much in federal income tax and those who say they pay about the right amount, a poll shows.

The Gallup poll found 46 percent of those surveyed said their payments to Uncle Sam are too high, while 47 percent said the amount they pay is "about right" and 3 percent said they considered their taxes too low.

The poll found low-income adults said they were least satisfied with what they pay in taxes, with 50 percent saying their tax tab is too high and 44 percent about right or too low.

Those earning $75,000 or more were almost evenly split between those who said their taxes are too high and those who said their taxes are about right or too low.

The poll also revealed different views on taxes based on party affiliations.

Among Democrats, 34 percent said they believed their taxes are too high, 56 percent about right and 5 percent too low.

Among Republicans, 54 percent said they believed their taxes are too high, 42 percent about right and 1 percent too low.

Results are based on telephone interviews conducted April 9-12 with a random sample of 1,016 adults. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
