Ex-Chicago Mayor Daley to give deposition

CHICAGO, April 10 (UPI) -- Former Chicago Mayor Richard C. Daley will give a deposition in a lawsuit alleging he was partly responsible for a wrongful conviction, lawyers said Tuesday.

Paul A. Michalik, a lawyer for the city, said the "scope" of the questioning to be allowed lawyers for Michael Tillman had not yet been decided, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Tillman says he confessed under torture to a 1986 rape and killing. He spent almost a quarter-century in prison before his conviction was overturned in 2010.

Former city police Cmdr. Jon Burge is now serving a 4 1/2-year sentence for perjury after being convicted of lying about the torture of criminal suspects.

U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer ruled last summer that Daley could be included in Tillman's lawsuit as a defendant. Daley is named both as mayor and as Cook County state's attorney in the 1980s.

While Daley has been named in a number of lawsuits involving alleged police torture, he has yet to be questioned under oath.
