NEW YORK, April 8 (UPI) -- Four New York police officers were wounded Sunday in a shootout with a suspect barricaded in his Brooklyn apartment, officials said.
It appeared none of the four Emergency Service Unit officers suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident, which left the suspect seriously wounded.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said some of the officers could be released from the hospital later Sunday, the New York Daily News said.
Kelly said the shootings occurred when an ESU team broke down the door of an apartment where resident Nakwon Foxworth was allegedly holding his pregnant girlfriend and infant child hostage at gunpoint. "The gunfight occurred in close quarters with the assailant and the officers no more than 10 feet apart," Kelly said. "It was a good thing that Foxworth stopped shooting."
The incident began when Foxworth, 33, an ex-convict, got into some kind of verbal dispute with moving-company employees.
A subsequent search of the residence turned up three firearms, including a sawed-off assault rifle that had been reported stolen in Florida and a handgun that had been part of a large gun purchase in North Carolina, the New York Post said.
