Shark bites surfer in Hawaii

WAHIAWA, Hawaii, April 4 (UPI) -- Shark warnings were posted at beaches on the Hawaiian island of Oahu after a man was bitten by a 10-foot shark.

A 28-year-old surfer was bitten on the left foot Tuesday by what appeared to be a 10-foot shark in a surfing area known as "Leftovers" on the island's North Shore, Jim Howe, operations chief of Honolulu's Ocean Safety Division, said Wednesday.

"It came up and got him and let him go, then came up and got him a second time," Howe said, adding the man was not seriously injured.

Paramedics treated the victim at the scene, then transported him to Wahiawa General Hospital, the (Honolulu) Star-Advertiser reported Wednesday.

Howe said lifeguards set up a command post and issued shark warnings for several of the area's surfing locations.
