Seismometers installed in Clintonville

CLINTONVILLE, Wis., March 30 (UPI) -- Michigan Technological University installed four seismometers in Clintonville, Wis., after the city was shaken by unconfirmed earthquakes, officials said.

The detectors along with four sound sensors were put in place at the city's request following a series of loud booms and house-shaking vibrations Tuesday evening not detected by other permanent seismometer stations or portable sensors around the state, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

The seismometers will detect seismic activity if it resumes, City Administrator Lisa Kuss said Friday.

On March 20, a 1.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded beneath Clintonville and other loud noises and shakes since then have been attributed to to a swarm of low-strength quakes.

Michigan Tech's seismometers will be connected to the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo., to monitor recordings.
