STANFORD, Fla., March 30 (UPI) -- Hundreds of people in South Florida say they are buying T-shirts, buttons and other apparel to show solidarity with slain black teenager Trayvon Martin.
"Too many of our black kids are getting killed,'' said Sharanda Richardson, of Fort Lauderdale, while wearing a "Seeking Justice for Trayvon'' button Wednesday at a prayer rally at New Mount Olive Baptist Church.
Flea market vendors told the South Florida Sun Sentinel that they have been filling hundreds of requests to customize apparel with photos of Martin.
Woody Balance, an employee at the 45th Street Flea Market in West Palm Beach, said he's not surprised by the demand.
"We do 'in loving memory' T-shirts all the time for people who pass away,'' he said. "It's a way to rally together and show support.''
Martin was killed by self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman on Feb. 26 in while walking home from a convenience store in Stanford, Fla. Zimmerman has claimed self-defense and hasn't been arrested for the incident.
Errin Stone, an Oakland Park Flea Market vendor at the booth Movin On, said her booth is selling a hoodie that features two pictures of Martin with the word "justice" written in Skittles, the candy Martin was carrying when killed, and black and white buttons that say "Justice for Trayvon."
Stone said a portion of the proceeds are being sent to the Martin family.
"This is one way for the community to show we can get together and show the family they're not alone,'' she said.
