Bear that bit Florida woman killed

LONGWOOD, Fla., March 22 (UPI) -- Florida wildlife officers have euthanized a black bear that bit a woman who was walking her dog at a housing complex in Longwood last week, officials said.

The female bear was shot with a tranquilizer dart as it foraged in a dumpster at the Camden Club complex Thursday morning and its 14-month-old cub was trapped by Florida Fish and Wildlife, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Authorities later euthanized the momma bear, which also was suspected of attacking local dogs.

"The bear has lost all fear of people," said Joy Hill, a spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "This behavior would not change. We can't risk her hurting anybody else."

The cub may be given to a zoo or placed in private animal habitat.
